iDashData available on iTunes!

iDashData, built using the same framework already available in iDashStocks, allows you to import custom data from a webserver in csv format. Any daily, numeric data can be imported and analyzed using the functionality also in iDashData (see below for screen shots). This is an example of the format of the csv file:

Product A,2010-01-01,1

Product A,2010-01-02,2

Product A,2010-01-03,3

Product A,2010-01-04,4

Product A,2010-01-05,5

Product B,2010-01-01,1

Product B,2010-01-02,2

Product B,2010-01-03,3

Product B,2010-01-04,4

Product B,2010-01-05,5

Where the first column is the name of your data, in this case Product A and Product B. The second column is the date of the data. The last column is your data. In this example, this would represent number of units sold.

The data can be imported on a schedule you set, and you can choose to have all the data loaded completely, if your csv file contained the entire database of data you wanted to import. Or you can have it load only new data. For example, if you wanted to create the csv file with only new entries per day. In the example above, each day the csv file would contain two lines: one for Product A's previous day sales and one for Product B's previous day sales.

All of the data analysis tools available in iDashStocks is also available in iDashData; you can compare metrics in charts, set goals or KPI's, review trends in data using the accelerometer to change the scale, etc.

You could even group metrics together. For example, if you had 10 products that you imported, you could group each product by a category or region it was sold in, and use these categories to look for trends.

iDashStocks version 1.1 released on the App Store!

Version 1.1 of iDashStocks has been released on Apple's App Store. Here are some of the additions in this version.


You can now group stocks into categories, e.g., industry, tech stocks. These groups can then be used to see trends between groups or drill-down to individual metrics as follows.

The main screen featuring groups. You can toggle between groups and individual stocks by tilting the iPhone either toward you or away from you.

The compare screen with groups enabled. Toggling between stocks and groups is also enabled on this screen by tilting the iPhone toward or away from you.

When you are viewing groups in the main screen, when you drill-down into the details, you will now see the stocks, or metrics, that make up those groups.

We added some other features such as news articles based on each stock or group.

There is a help screen which will take you to our help videos on YouTube as well.

We are in the workings of creating version 1.2, so stay tuned for more exciting updates.

iDashStocks, Dashboard-Reporting Framework Additions

iDashStocks and the generalized dashboard-reporting framework it is built on have already been out for a week with steady growing sales on Apple's iTunes and App Store and we're already working on improving it and adding more features. We want to add the ability to compare more measures, or facts if you're more familiar with dashboard terminology. In future updates, which will be free through iTunes and the App Store for existing iDashStocks users :), you'll be able to switch between measures and perform the same drill-down and kpi monitoring functionality already in iDashStocks but with more data. Review the P/E ratio vs. price, for example. This is our goal, to bring a solid dashboard reporting tool to your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. We will keep adding functionality and listening to your suggestions so iDashStocks and the generalized dashboard-reporting framework provide you with all the tools that have made dashboard reporting a popular means to solid decision making. Another logical next step is to provide more grouping of categories of stocks, e.g., to answer the question of which industry had the best stock price increase, energy stocks vs. technology stocks (this would be adding more dimensions to the “cube” to increase the amount of slice-and-dice you can perform on your data). Combine this with being able to control how you slice-and-dice data using a feature already in iDashStocks, using the built-in accelerometer to change chart scales, and dashboard reporting just got pretty valuable to your business, all this right from your pocket. Who would have guessed.

iPhone Business App Deployment

We were thinking how to make deployment of custom business apps easier when I came across this article: http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/193851/iphone_os_40_makes_iphone_a_business_contender.html

“Apple is also cutting the cord, enabling IT admins to push custom business apps wirelessly over the air rather than requiring users to sync with iTunes.”

It sounds like it would work like the BlackBerry Server, enabling IT to deploy apps locally, within the organization. This would make deploying updates much easier (obviously), while enabling custom business apps to quickly change with the dynamic nature of businesses. Sounds like a step in the right direction. The iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad already provide great user experiences to the masses. Now, business users will start gaining confidence in these devices for use within their organization. Who will be the early adopters and want user-friendly business apps driving how they view their organization's data?
